"When it comes to indiepop, few names are as respected as Ric Menck and Paul Chastain. Through years of collaboration in groups such as Velvet Crush, Bag O' Shells, Choo Choo Train and The Big Maybe they just about *were* the entire US indiepop scene, but it's as The Springfields that they made perhaps their best, most beloved records. Taking their cues from influences like The Byrds and The Hollies they created a sound that was as jangly and melodic as their inspirations, but marked by a unique songwriting voice, excellent tunes, and sterling arrangements. "Singles 1986-1991" collects the 5 singles they released on Sarah, Picture Book, Summershine and Seminal Twang and adds one extra tune, here on vinyl for the first time. From the Paisley Underground-aligned opener "This Perfect Day" through the perfect pop of songs like "Sunflower" and a clutch of savvy covers, The Springfields created a compact, flawless catalog that more than justifies its legendary status and this timely reissue."

The Sorry For Laughing album was released in 1986 on cassette only. It is a project by Gordon H. Whitlow who is also a member of legendary US avantgarde collective Biota, formerly Mnemonists or Mnemonist Orchestra. Whitlow composed and recorded the album all by himself. The accompanying artwork for the original cassette release was made by several members of Mnemonists, the visual department of Biota. Sorry For Laughing has a different sound though. It is more varied, there are elements of post punk as well as elements of contemporary classical music. Somehow though you can hear Biota in there as well. Les Disques du Crepuscule is in the air. After all, the idea was to make a Christmas album. Whitlow says that when he lived in Colorado and worked in a bakery a homeless drifter used to come to the shop and buy the same stuff every day. With Christmas approaching, he interviewed the guy and got his Biota mates involved. Piano parts were recorded at a wealthy house-sit in Denver, others at Mulberry Street Studio, home of Biota's Bill Sharp who also co-produced the album. A most interesting album that's been lost for a long time. We are glad to bring it back into the world, remastered by Martin Bowes of Attrition. Gordon Whitlow says about it: "This is a solo musical project recorded in the winter of 1985-86 and self-released on... more

Here is an extraordinary excavation from the buried history of the Downtown NYC scene: the unreleased, self-titled Transmission EP, recorded in 1981 - 82. Comprised of Jonathan Kane and Daniel Galliduani, the duo is one-half of the original version of the behemoth band Swans. Transmission both preceded and ran concurrent with the formation of Swans (Michael Gira was enough of a fan that he mixed Transmission's few live shows), and much of their material evolved into Swans tracks, including the standout "Weakling". Even without the historical connection, this is a great record. Unclassifiable within any conventional genre, it recalls the improvisation and complex, trance-inducing beats of North African music while adding a crust of No Wave bluster and a enough percussive artillery to sink a small island. Galliduani, whose saxophone is so heavily treated and processed that it sounds like a wall of guitars, lays down drones then adds weird, fierce, Eastern-tinged polyphonics; meanwhile Kane is a frenzied dervish, generating complex, cross-tempos and rhythmic subdivision. Imagine the Master Musicians of Jajouka (Brian Jones recordings, of course), powered with the crushing intensity of Swans, the twisted esoterica of Public Image's _Flowers of Romance_ and some unbelievably relentless drumming, and you'll get an idea of what we missed by not hearing this 25 years ago. _Transmission_ is not only an absolute must-have for fans of either Swans or Jonathan Kane's bruising present-day efforts (not to mention his fine work with Rhys Chatham and La Monte Young), but an essential missing link from that Lower East Side scene of yesteryear. Lower East Side scene of yesteryear.

It’s going to be 30 years since Pale Saints released their debut album, The Comforts of Madness. In celebration, 4AD have remastered the album and are reissuing it on January 17th 2020. The highlights include a bonus disc of previously unreleased session tracks and the band’s only John Peel Session.
Hailing from Leeds, the original Pale Saints line-up were Ian Masters (bass/vocals), Chris Cooper (drums), and Graeme Naysmith (guitar). Having released a clutch of singles since forming in 1987, they put out their debut album in January 1990. The album included the tracks ‘Sight of You’, ‘You Tear The World In Two’ and a cover of Opal’s ‘Fell From the Sun’ (the band that once featured 4AD alumna Kendra Smith and later became Mazzy Star). They made an exciting and frenetic entrance with The Comforts of Madness – an album that swam against the tide and even found its way on to the Top 40 of the UK Album Charts.
For the album’s 30th anniversary, Ian Masters has revisited the band’s sessions where they demoed the album at their Woodhouse Studio before heading to the Blackwing Studios in London to record them with John Fryer and Gil Norton. These album demos plus the band’s only John Peel Session (recorded 23rd of July 1989 at Maida Vale studios in London) help to create a bonus disc of material for both the double CD and LP editions. The single LP is a faithful repress of the original and the artwork for the deluxe editions has been reworked by Timothy O’Donnell.
