...se ne sentiva proprio la mancanza. Nel vecchio forum, l'omonima discussione fu una delle più consultate e interessanti per monitorare l'ondata di ristampe, raccolte e cofanetti che sta letteralmente sommergendo gli scaffali dei negozi di dischi di tutto il mondo.

Se mi venisse richiesto di individuare la principale peculiarità dell'industria discografica degli anni Duemila, non esiterei un solo istante a descrivere la sovrapproduzione di ristampe della grande musica del passato che, attualmente, stanno adempiendo all'importante compito di colmare le lacune creative del musicista moderno (troppo spesso alle prese con idee mutuate dal passato e per nulla originali).

La funzione di questo thread, dunque, sarà quella di aggiornarci sulle "nuove" pubblicazioni (o ri-edizioni, cofanetti, etc.) dei nostri beniamini del passato.

Comincio con una segnalazione da paura (ovvero relativa alla riedizione ampliata del mio album preferito dei Pavement):

Pavement: Wowee Zowee - Sordid Sentinels Edition (2xCD Matador, 1995/2006) - "Wowee Zowee is right. Following in the footsteps of their 2002 reissue of Pavement's 1992 debut album Slanted & Enchanted and their 2004 reissue of 1994's Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, Matador will reissue Pavement's fan-favorite third studio release, 1995's Wowee Zowee.

While a tracklist, release date, and load of additional information are still in the works, a few exciting tidbits about the reissue have been revealed by the folks at Matador.

Wowee Zowee version 2.0 will include around twenty album covers by Steve Keene, a never-before-heard concert from the WZ tour, and a number of previously unreleased tracks and rarities, many of which are alternate takes. And that's all we know right now, sorry!" - Pitchfork, che tuttavia aggiunge:

"And the moment we've all been waiting for: the tracklist for Matador's deluxe two-disc reissue of Pavement's 1995 album Wowee Zowee. And goddamn, did Matador go all-out.

The Sordid Sentinels edition, due out November 7, features a whopping 18 unreleased tracks, including outtakes, live tracks, and radio sessions, as well as a ton of B-sides and random soundtrack and compilation tracks.

Did you know that Pavement was on a Descendents tribute album? Neither did I.".

Sprung from the downtown No Wave scene, Ut (Nina Canal, Jacqui Ham and Sally Young) originated in New York City in December 1978. The inheritors of the fertile collision between rock, free jazz and the avant garde that first manifest itself in the Velvet Underground, Ut soon became a serious force within the New York music scene.

The band were joined briefly by film-maker Karen Achenbach in 1979 before resuming as a three-piece and migrating to London in 1981. Ut toured the UK with bands such as The Fall, The Birthday Party, The Raincoats and Pigbag. Originally releasing albums on their own label, Out Records, the band became a favourite of John Peel's (http://www.bbc.co.uk...l/artists/u/ut/) and recorded a Session for his show in 1984 before joining forces with Blast First in 1987.

The critically acclaimed In Gut's House was originally released in 1988 and made NME's Top 50 that year. As The Washington Post exclaimed, "With In Gut??s House, Ut has scraped and droned one of the finest underground rock albums of the year... The tightly interwoven, firmly focused sound... is rich, spooky, urgent and quite unexpectedly beautiful.?

In 1989 the band recorded and released the album Griller. Engineered by label mate Steve Albini, who shared Ut's raw aesthetic. Griller captured the gripping intensity and sheer power of the Ut experience.

Unfortunately, Griller was to be Ut??s final release and in March 1990 Ut played their last concert in Paris.

A seminal influence on later bands such as Sonic Youth, and spiritual companions of The Fall, the miracle is not simply that Ut survived for 11 years, but that every Ut performance blasted away everything inessential and reached for the primal nerve.

Ut never softened or diluted its force, its restless confrontation and its pull on the secret heart of rock and roll.

Blast First / Mute reissue two classic UT albums ?? In Gut's House (1988) and Griller (1989) ?? on 14th August 2006.

Non è di quest'anno ma era un po' che volevo segnalare una cosa, che per me, ha del magico: sono state ristampate di recente, purtroppo solo in vinile, tutte le pubblicazioni di Derrick May sotto il monicker Rhythim Is Rhythim. Magari interessa solo i più feticisti o una sparuta schiera di irriducibili, ma erano circa 10/15 anni che non se ne vedano a spasso.

ma non fanno cagare le UT; non mi piacciono come gli Ike Yard (almeno i 2 album ristampati)

e poi hai letto cosa ha detto il Washington Post (famoso per le previsioni meteo)?

E vista la grandezza del disco, la cosa acquisisce direttamente i connotati della cazzata.

E perchè!? A me hanno sempre ispirato grande simpatia, invece. Credo che la loro musica rispecchi fedelmente le loro personalità, peraltro. Cazzo, io li adoro: un manipolo di casinisti dotati di grande talento per le belle melodie.

P.s. per Flight Sensations: a me fanno letteralmente impazzire anche Brighten The Corners (Stereo e Embassy Row sono incisioni indelebili nella granitica storia del rock!) e Terror Twilight (se non ti commuovi all'ascolto di Ann Don't Cry significa che sei un uomo cattivo)!

Mitico Brighten The Corners sì! E pure Terror Twilight ha i suoi momenti (...And The Carrot Rope! Che video!). Infatti sto aspettando le ristampe per comprarli...

Comunque no dai, Pavement e antipatia sono due parole che in una frase non possono starci.

E' una discussione sulle ristampe in genere (nella pagina precedente ci sono segnalazioni di album non appartenenti alla discografia dei Pavement).

Ben venga, anzi, qualcuno che abbia voglia di esprimere le proprie impressioni su uno specifico album (magari anche dilungandosi)!

Mondo Clash: dopo il doppio The Singles (Sony) di cinque o sei anni fa, contenente per l'appunto tutti i singoli UK e USA, e pioggia di The Essential (Sony), The Best Of (Sony), Deluxe Editions e Sticazzi vari, è uscito un cofanetto con le replica editions di tutti i singoli UK, ovviamente b-sides comprese e artwork originali riprodotti. E' disponibile in due versioni (7" o CD), per un totale di 19 (diciannove) dischi. Manco a dirlo, fantasia impera e il box si chiama di nuovo The Singles:

Quasi tutti gli album di Schulze sono stati già ristampati: Mirage, Picture music, Audentity X lo scorso anno, e anche Irrlicht credo nello scorso anno, tutti con bonus-track; Cyborg quest'anno con una traccia aggiuntiva di cinquanta minuti (sarà buona?) e un packaging piú sostanazioso, vedremo...
In compenso Blackdance, bellissimo, è fuori catalogo.

Sulla qualità delle tracce bonus certo c'è da discutere...

There needed to be a gloomy remotely intimate glam pop group named after a character created by Franz Kafka who detuned their pained, pining guitars like the Velvet Underground, who screwed up dance beats with as much nimble knowingness and/or amateurish exuberance as Devo, who faced up to long lasting reality with as much sad, mad grace as Magazine, who got stuck into logic as defiantly as Pere Ubu, who had spent a lot of time watching Television and listening to the first six or seven songs written by Buzzcocks.

At the end of the 1970s, after punk rock had to some extent realigned British musical history and established urgent new priorities, there just had to be, somewhere at the rainy edge of reason. Something that was christened The Sound of Young Scotland, together with Orange Juice, whose guitars were also radiant and brittle, whose rhythms were also scrubbed and blunt, whose vocals were also proud and serious, but who sounded like another group completely.

They played desolate, fidgety songs by David Bowie, Talking Heads and Television that could have belonged to a dry, extravagant musical based on the definitively alienated life of Josef K, cerebral, visceral songs that were filtered through the newly minted post-punk attitude that clichés murdered inspiration. They took themselves very seriously whilst circling the idea that fun was a very peculiar notion. They wore suits, even ties ?? fastidiously peeling away from the leather, pins and gunk of the trad punk look - and their pale, trim and amused, vaguely guilt ridden lead singer Paul Haig was a ghostly hint of a non-existent mod Samuel Beckett who played double bass in 60s Paris for a visiting Sonny Rollins.

Josef K and Orange Juice were both operating high above England, tense and certain, cool and fraught, closer in a way to New York and Detroit than London. They were on the cusp between the 70s and the 80s, closer in a way to the 60s and the 21st Century.

Nearly everyone ignored Josef K, including ultimately themselves. But they were right all along. They wrote prickly, plaintive pop songs that were the sound of depressed young men having lethargic tantrums about the mysteriously inevitable everyday. They added something new to the possibility of pop, combining that which needs to be leisurely interpreted with a quick, sensational celebration of the moment that just needs to be taken, prized, and thrown away.

A touch more rational. A little less glaring. A splinter less uptight.
Lacking, perhaps, the art for art's sake element that some of us swooned over, and which we see explicitly echoed in they way, say, the popular Franz Ferdinand express themselves.

comunque, quando leggo certi giudizi sui Pavement mi vien da ridere. Questa propensione generale a dire che "il gruppo X sembra il gruppo Y senza le palle" (et similia) mi ricorda un brutto atteggiamento  del pubblico italiano ai concerti. "bravi, ma sembrate i "nome a caso"". Come dire...vengo al concerto per paragonarti a qualcuno, non per vedere se sei capace di scrivere pezzi interessanti etc.

Lassigue, i Pavement hanno sfornato dischi fatti di canzoni grandiose e di cose magari meno a fuoco. Ma se vuoi trovare uno che ha più palle di Mark E.Smith a fare quella roba (che poi il parallelo non è così agevole, a parte il fatto che Malkmus adora i Fall) allora continua a cercare all'infinito, perchè non c'è.
Per me nemmeno l'adoratissimo e divino James Murphy quando canta, pur risultando un motherfucker, raggiunge un decimo del carisma di Mark Smith. E stiamo parlando di uno che sta comunque rivoluzionando qualcosa nella musica attuale.

E poi, leggere che a Frankie non sono mai stati simpatici i Pavement mi ha fatto tirare un sospiro di sollievo.

Lassigue, i Pavement hanno sfornato dischi fatti di canzoni grandiose e di cose magari meno a fuoco. Ma se vuoi trovare uno che ha più palle di Mark E.Smith a fare quella roba (che poi il parallelo non è così agevole, a parte il fatto che Malkmus adora i Fall) allora continua a cercare all'infinito, perchè non c'è.

Uscì con quella splendida infornata del catalogo LTM del 2002, assieme ad altre assurde figate tipo The Names , Ludus, Department S, The Orchids, The Passage e soprattutto The Wake. Non mi pare che vi sia stato un seguito a quella uscita, magari sbaglio.

Si soffre. Ho dimenticato i fantastici Field Mice perché, quando ho scritto, indossavo i miei abiti wave (rigorosamente nerazzurri, ovviamente). Quanto ai Ludus, giustamente osannati da Morrissey, trovo oltremodo imprescindibile The Damage. Ah, bei tempi quando l'indie non si chiamva ancora indie! ;)

John Fahey: Sea Changes & Coelacanths (2xCD Table Of The Elements, 2006) - Subtitled: A Young Person's Guide to John Fahey. This compiles Fahey's earlier releases for TOE: 1997's Womblife and the live followup Georgia Stomps, Atlanta Struts; plus the Hard Time Empty Bottle Blues 12" (all o/p as individiual releases at this point). "In the 43 years between his first recordings and his death in 2001, John Fahey stomped across the American soundscape, leaving behind footprints of influence so breathtakingly vast that entire genres now huddle within them. Fahey's mesmeric guitar compositions fused the blues' syncopated rhythms with contemporary dissonance; Eastern influences with musique-concrete. He was the first to demonstrate that traditional steel-string finger-picking techniques could be used to express a universe of non-traditional ideas, and his contribution to American music is immense. Sea Changes & Coelacanths compiles all of Fahey's mid-'90s recordings for the Table of the Elements label and embodies an artistic essence, with sounds that are undiluted, uncompromised, starkly honest, pure of vision, and in every way innovative -- just like the man himself."

No, sono coglione fino in fondo. Coincidenza vuole che mi sia arrivato giusto oggi. Non l'ho ancora ascoltato, ma da una sommaria "sbirciatina" allo scarno booklet credo si tratti di un'incisione più "musicale" (appartiene alle sessioni di registrazione di The Invasion Of Thunderbolt Pagoda di MacLise) e meno "concettuale" (come quell'abominio di Bryant Park, per l'appunto). Ti saprò dire...

Io l'ho ascoltato Matti, e mi è pure piaciuto un bel po', così come pare sia piaciuto a Fabio.
Alla fine, nonostante il pezzo sia piuttosto monolitico e monocorde (aggettivi che nel mio vocabolario personale non sono affatto sinonimo di noia), si lascia ascoltare anziché no. Lo stile è minimale come i NWW di "Soliloquy For Lilith", tanto per intenderci, mentre per quanto riguarda la strumentazione si tratta solo di organo opportunamente filtrato (nessuna traccia dell'amato violino).
Inquietante la copertina con Conrad truccato in quel modo. :D

Se non sbaglio, grazie a questa raccolta, è la prima volta che uno dei Lanthanides viene pubblicato in cd.

Io l'ho ascoltato Matti, e mi è pure piaciuto un bel po', così come pare sia piaciuto a Fabio.

Assolutamente sì, l'ho apprezzato assai. Un ascolto rigenerante, se in mood da drones è un bel tomo su cui andare sicuri (ed io sono in periodo conradiano, ad ogni modo - vedi Thuunderboy!...).
