ESCE A GIUGNO IL SECONDO ALBUM DI BON IVER
Four years after Bon Iver emerged from a Wisconsin cabin with one of the 2000s' most celebrated records, the forlorn folkie has announced his second album. Featuring pedal-steel, saxophone and a children's choir, the as-yet-untitled disc will be released in June.
It hasn't been an easy process, recording the follow-up to For Emma, Forever Ago. "Somewhere along the line, I forgot how to write songs," Bon Iver's Justin Vernon explained to Rolling Stone. "I couldn't do it anymore with a guitar. It wasn't happening." Whereas his debut was recorded in broken-hearted obscurity, Vernon's critical and commercial success increased the pressure for new Bon Iver material. Instead of sitting alone in a dark room, the singer went into a studio ?? and called some friends.
"I brought in a lot of people to change my voice ?? not my singing voice, but my role as the author of this band, this project," Vernon said. Although For Emma was mostly a solo affair, Bon Iver has generally toured as a band. For these new songs, Vernon brought in sidemen such as pedal-steel guitarist Greg Leisz, and sax virtuoso Colin Stetson, who has backed Arcade Fire, Beirut and Tom Waits. "I built the record myself, but I allowed those people to come in and change the scene."
Alas (or hurray), Vernon doesn't seem to have rung Kanye West, one of his principal distractions over the last 12 months. Vernon was an unlikely contributor to West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and he has assisted at several of West's recent, epic concerts. In the break between Bon Iver albums, Vernon also released records with the indie groups Volcano Choir and Gayngs. "The whole Gayngs thing has knocked down so many doors for my brain," Vernon admitted last week.
Bon Iver's new album will have 10 tracks, each inspired by a different place. Perth, named after the Australian city, is a "Civil War-sounding heavy metal song" with martial drums, choir and "wailing guitars". Minnesota Wisconsin lays Stetson's bass saxophone over Vernon's finger-picked guitar, and the album closer, Beth/Rest, is "definitely the part where you pick up your joint and relight it".

Vernon and brother Nate recorded and mixed the album over a three-year period at a former veterinarian's clinic in Wisconsin. Regular Vernon collaborators Sean Carey, Mike Noyce, and Matt McCaughan play, sing, and contributed production to the album. Volcano Choir members Jim Schoenecker and Tom Wincek helped out with processing, and Rob Moose, who has worked with the National and Antony and the Johnsons, helped arrange strings. The LP also features pedal steel player Greg Leisz and a horn section that includes Mike Lewis, C.J. Camerieri, and free-jazz monster Colin Stetson. No disrespect to 1995′s ??Psychic Hearts?? or 2007′s ??Trees Outside The Academy?? is intended on our part when we promise ??Demolished Thoughts?? burnishes Thurston??s rep as a classic songwriter in ways we never anticipated when this album was first being talked about last year.

Mmmm sarebbe un peccato se dopo la ritrovata (ma comunque da perfezionare) vena più pop e forma canzone di Volta si perdesse nuovamente in qualcosa di troppo concettuale, più affascinante per la forma che non per il contenuto (ovvero le canzoni)... attendo fiducioso e impaziente comunque.

Dato che ultimamente sono alle prese con l'esordio dei Flotation Toy Warning datato 2004 che si intitola Bluffer's Guide to the Flight Deck, scoperto grazie ad Alessio (good vibrations), che ringrazio di cuore. Ancora devo assimilare appieno l'album, ma lungo le sue note note rintraccio una notevole cura negli arrangiamenti orchestrali che sembrano una versione più austera dei Mercury Rev di Deserter's Songs, innervati da una raffinatezza melodica tipicamente britannica. Il britpop che incontra il chamber-pop si potrebbe dire. Dopo questa parentesi, volevo annunciare che tra la fine di questo 2011 e l'inizio del 2012, i FTW daranno alle stampe il loro secondo album dopo l'esordio del 2004, che sarà intitolato The Machine That Made Us.
Sul tubo si trovano già 2 brani di questo nuovo album, che però ancora devo ascoltare. Sono sicuro che good vibrations, ne sarà ben felice.

Avessi perso tempo dietro le copertine, mi sarei perso tonnellate di grandi dischi...
Sì, è senz'altro vero. Però è pure vero che si tratta del "biglietto da visita" del disco. Una brutta copertina fa partire col piede sbagliato, esattamente come una copertina bella può invece creare aspettative promettenti (per quanto magari false)...
Era una considerazione così, di massima. Chiaro che non giudico un disco dalla copertina. Lascio però che siate voi i primi a sperimentare...

Dopo averlo visto destreggiarsi magnificamente con l'r'n'b, questo ritorno al passato (che poi mica tanto passato, visto che il debutto era molto più scarno come suono) un po' mi delude. Comunque il pezzo non è affatto male, ma il rischio di cadere nel minestrone indie è dietro l'angolo.

Si "Il mucchio" di giugno ho letto la rece di Lupercalia di Patrick Wolf ma non deve uscire il 20 giugno?
Comunque viene giudicato un album di passaggio con la palese volontà di raggiungere un pubblico più vasto ma senza la "zampata mannara".
