in realta' Pancakes me li aveva gia' accennati ma quella review e' una potente conferma

Effettivamente è il disco dove si sentono un pò di più quelle cose, non in maniera troppo preponderante rispetto a prima o dopo però: sono comunque nati e morti con l'obiettivo di sincretizzare il metal classico americano con quello moderno.

Questa chicca in verità la lessi dopo che avevo già scoperto e amato Point Oblivion dei Darke Complex, ma i suoi toni così pretenziosi non poterono che spingermi ulteriormente a fare l'avvocato del diavolo e a rafforzare il culto attorno questo ensemble che peraltro si sciolse poco dopo [non credo in relazione all'articolo]. valgono anche commenti che avete visto su ondarock eh

 

in realta' settimana scorsa mi e' venuta l'idea di aprire il topic "album che ho scoperto solo perche' un utente che so essere totalmente opposto a me ne ha parlato malissimo", ma poi ho deciso di non aprire perche' non volevo che facilitasse discordia quando invece ci deve essere solo amore!

Pero' vabbeh magari ingrandendo lo scopo e' meno diretto.

(lessi recensioni e commenti negativissimi sul web nella seconda metà 90s che mi convinsero a provarli per capire se facevano veramente cagare)

un classico di quando sto guardando album ambient/drone: commenti tipo "it goes nowhere" o "does absolutely nothing from start to finish".

Ascolto subito.

Una recensione su RYM di Imperial dei Soen

 

 

Imperial by Disturbed

David Draiman and his pals really surprised me with this release. He might have changed his approach to singing but his baldness and lyricism is still top notch. I almost cried when comrade David sang about how the system is corrupt and our leaders are terrible. They are all greedy, all they want stay in power and to do so they fuck us, the working class. If they just listened to us... This is so brave and deserves appreciation.

 

The music still follows the classic Disturbed formula of groovy riff, anthemic chorus, bridge and repeat. The drums are really simplistic and straight to the point. I heard they signed Opeth's Martin Lopez for this release but it more sounds like someone who just figured out how to do double bass on drums. I don't think the amazing lyricism in this album carries the weight of this repetitive, overproduced, cheesy and wanky music.

 

Look, I don't know why they call themselves "Soen" or what "Soen" means. But hey, listen comrade. Hold! We will show those billionaires!

Questo processo precipita con piena sfacciataggine commerciale in "Junk". Non stupiscono così soul artificiali ("Walkaway Blues"), rozzi techno ("Do It, Try It"), soft-dance ("Bibi The Dog", "Laser Gun") e hit che farebbero invidia agli Wham ("Road Blaster").

 

Ci si arrende poi alla realtà dei fatti, a un album piacione, abborracciato, antiquato (rimandi agli Air più svenevoli quando va bene)

recensione di una compila della carter family, mi ha letteralmente venduto il disco:

"The Carter Family were hugely popular and beloved country artists from Depression Era and naturally today they are seen as untouchable and influential ancestors of any country artist who came after them. This sounds very interesting in theory but in reality this music actually scares me - I understand they were very important and all that, however it doesn't make for enjoyable listening. Everything about Carter's - from their gloomy harmonies to joyless songs clashes with my perception of music as something that uplifts the spirit (and this is coming from somebody who usually finds depressing music beautiful & relaxing) so every time I force myself to hear it again, I marvel at my own curiosity, what on earth had possessed me to buy this CD without hearing it before and how I simply can't convince myself that this universally acclaimed and historical music is pleasure to hear. It is not.

To me (personally - and I don't care what encyclopedias say) Carter's appear as some of those old family portraits where faces from different times speak about joyless lives, no laughter and only hard work & drudgery. You know, God-fearing, rising with a dawn, back-breaking field work and poverty, people who look ancient but were actually young as you or me. Even photographs of Carters scare me. And this is strange because usually music is one of the places where human spirit soars with beauty, harmony and emotions - where many other artists from same time (Jimmie Rodgers for one) have some kind of joy and spark, Carters are absolutely tight-lipped and adamant about not having any fun - they would probably criticize me right now for putting too much sugar in my coffee.
Sour, dour and stern, these country music ancestors are curious listening for anybody interested in Depression Era music - as for me,I find it almost gothic and very deeply disturbing. If on a rainy night I would find myself in front of their doors, I would rather continue trough the storm."

Life Without Buildings - Any Other City (2001) - 6

Tra i primi album a riscoprire il post-punk negli anni duemila, "Any Other City" è melodico e monocorde quanto basta ma il suo difetto (o pregio a seconda) sono le parti vocali della cantante che non sta zitta un secondo, ripetendo parole a mo di cantilena infantile. Se come me odiate le Slits e quelle merde lì, questa qui vi verrà voglia di sgozzarla con un cacciavite. Bellino ma con grossi difetti...

 

Non conosco nemmeno le Slits ma il commento finale mi ha parecchio incuriosito

Premesso che ultimamente mi capita raramente di trovare recensioni che corrispondano al mio gusto, devo dire che mi faccio influenzare poco sia quelle positive  che da quelle negative, vado molto a istinto. (giusto due giorni fa per dire notavo che sul sito l'ultimo di Lady Gaga è stato recensito con 4.30 Ermal Meta con 6.5).
